For whatever reason Ruby and Ada had it in their heads that when we moved we would get a cat. They had been asking forever, and Steve and I joked that they got 2 cats when we moved. The two neighborhood cats pretty much live at our house, go on walks with us, hang out by the pool, and are much loved by all of us.
Steve and I decided that being locked down for who knows how long was probably a great time to actually get the indoor kitten the girls had been begging for. We had done some research on hypo-allergenic cats and discovered a couple breeders of Siberian cats near Waco. Hypoallergenic cats are certainly not cheap so, yes, we did pay a ridiculous amount of money for a kitten. However, I have not had a single sneeze or any allergy issues with her in the house so it's been totally worth every penny. One of the breeders posted a new litter was born March 21st. Within a week had had to put a down payment on one to reserve it. We c??///hose one as a family, but as you can imagine newborn kittens are hard to tell what they will actually look like. The lady was so sweet and sent us pictures and videos of our kitten as we waited for her to be old enough to adopt.
Pixie was born March 21 and we reserved her about a week later and then had to wait, wait, wait until the very end of May to pick her up. We gathered food, a litter box, toys and all sorts of kitten accessories as we waited. The kitten we choose was named Willow, but the girls wanted to name her ourselves of course so we had weeks of making lists of names, voting, and revoting. We originally voted on mom's idea, Cora (as in Cora N. Teen) but Ada wasn't sold and kept throwing out other names in the days ahead. She's the one who ultimately came up with Pixie and we all agreed it was a good name. We surprised Ruby and Ada the day it was finally time to get our Pixie. We drove about an hour and a half and collected the tiniest little furball. She rode in a carrier quietly but nervously all the way home. We kept her in our bedroom the first couple days so she could get comfortable and she spent much of that first day or so under our bed. After just a couple days though she began exploring the rest of the house and warmed up to all of us. She either jumped the baby gate we put up at night or squeezed through the openings because the girls found her sneaking upstairs in the night.
She gets wild at night right around the girls bedtime and started playing a "game" where she would dash up the stairs a hundred miles and hour and tear around their bedrooms when they were trying to get to sleep. Other than that, she is a very sweet cat and extremely patient. One of our children thinks she is her personal baby doll and carries her around all day long, but Pixie never gets frustrated with it. She's super playful, loves tinfoil balls and strings the best, and loves Ruby and Ada.
Ruby's job is to clean the litter box and she does it faithfully without complaint (or really even needed to be reminded). Ada's supposed to feed her and give her water. Pixie got into the habit of sleeping with Ruby almost every night up in her loft bed- so sweet! She has several favorite napping places, often snuggled up to someone.
| So tiny! |
The first few months we had her she would sleep in the strangest positions. Often half falling off of a chair or ledge and she didn't seem to have much coordination or body awareness so I was always worried she was going to slide off!
She has definitely been a blessing to us during this looooonnng pandemic of self distancing and oodles of home time.
