Ada made it back to school for a few days before spring break. We had plans for Gaga and Grandpa to fly down to visit and we had rented a lake house to stay at for a few nights. As spring break approached there was a little buzz about Covid19, so they were careful about washing hands, wiping down their seats and keeping as much distance as possible on the flight down. Once they were here we pretty much did our own thing so we weren't terribly concerned. We went strawberry picking and saw the caves at Longhorn Cavern State Park, but mostly enjoyed time outside on the lake. It was Lyndon B Johnson Lake a few hours south of us, but it's essentially the Colorado River. As the week went on, the news became filled more and more with the realization of the widespread and seriousness of the pandemic. I started worrying then that Ada really did have Covid and this is when Steve wasn't feeling great and coughing and coughing and coughing. Of course I was scared we were passing it to my parents. However, they had had a weird illness a month earlier where my dad had the hiccups for like 3 days straight (which we later read was a possible symptom!). Things started closing down left and right; Baylor will have a second week of spring break, TX public schools will have 2 additional weeks of spring break, the Final 4 is cancelled... every time we looked at our phones there was something else. We were concerned mom and dad wouldn't be able to get home, and if the planes were still flying, was it even safe? Thankfully they made it safely home and the lockdown began. We didn't realize it at the time, but it was such a huge blessing that they did come because it will likely be over a year until we see each other face to face again.
March was a strange, long month. The writing on the wall became clearer and it was pretty obvious no one would be going back to school/work this spring. We quickly readjusted, set up work spaces and ipads, reorganized coursework/instruction, learned how to do everything on Zoom, made masks, and began ordering groceries and food deliveries. Ruby and Ada took it all in stride after the initial shock of discovering they wouldn't be returning to school, their activities or their friends. They certainly increased their screen time with school, videos, games, and Zoom playdates. But we also spent a lot of time outside and they even got in the pool in late March!
