Can I Have Some Candy?

That's what Ada said when I asked her what you say when you knock on someone's door for Halloween!  She was obsessed with the candy (and still is)!  I'm thinking this is probably the first time we've really ever let her have much.

We didn't make it to a (real) pumpkin patch this fall as a family (because I got sick the weekend we planned to go).  Ruby's class was going on a field trip to a "pumpkin patch" the following week, so Ada and I decided to tag along.

The quotes were intentional.  I had to search to find a real pumpkin patch/farm within an hour of Waco, but most of my searches came up with churches that had "a truckload of pumpkins delivered the first week of October"!  All things considered, they did a pretty good job of making the most of their pumpkin patch.  They had a large parking lot covered in hay with hundreds of pumpkins placed on pallets all around.

For the field trip, the kids got to decorate a small pumpkin, go through a hay maze, and go on a hay ride too.

We found a couple nice pumpkins and some gourds to take home and had fun decorating our fireplace and mantle.  (I'm excited to have a fireplace this Christmas!)

The girls picked the faces they wanted to carve into their pumpkins and helped sort out the seeds to roast, but mostly mom and dad did the carving.  We learned when in Texas you should wait to carve your pumpkin until just a day or two before Halloween.  We carved ours Monday and by Friday they were already getting kind of gross because it was just not cool enough!

Per usual, the girls went back and forth on what they wanted to be for Halloween this year until about 3 weeks ago.  They talked about Elsa, Anna, and a variety of other ideas.  Ruby was pretty set in stone that she wanted to be Olaf and Ada decided to be a panda.  They made it very easy on this Momma!  I told Ada I would make her a Minnie Mouse costume but she wanted Ruby's old panda costume.  Ruby found a plain white shirt in her drawer and I had plenty of felt so we made a trip to Hobby Lobby for two spools of tulle.  Her costume was easy-peasy and she loved it!

About a week before Halloween, Ruby came home from school and told us "pretty much all the girls are going to be Elsa, but I'm going to be Olaf!" We brought monster cookies and Ruby got to wear her costume to school on Thursday for her class party (Ada wore hers that morning too even though she didn't have school!).

We dressed up again for trick-or-treating Friday night.  The McKeevers (who we are renting from) live just a few blocks away, so we went to their house and met a bunch of friends and neighbors to celebrate with.  What a crew!

It was a beautiful night, about 60 degrees.  The girls had a blast running from house to house and were very focused on checking out which kind of candy they got at each stop!  We went up and down two streets and that was the perfect amount.  One interesting thing about Woodway, the city we live in, is that there aren't any sidewalks or streetlights.  Which means once the sun goes down it is dark!

Ada kept asking why it was dark out.  She doesn't have a very strong grasp on the concept of time.  I don't think she gets the difference between naps and nighttime, but she has been asking about it a lot so maybe she's starting to sort it all out!

All in all, it was a fun Halloween and we were grateful to be able to spend it getting to know some new friends here in Waco.  And grateful we didn't have to bundle up like our friends back in STL or MN/WI!

The next morning we got up and headed to Baylor for their homecoming parade.

We had been told it is the biggest collegiate parade in the country and it was pretty crazy!  We bundled up- 40 degrees feels pretty cold when you're used to the 80's- but it warmed up fast.  The girls gathered candy, because we needed more, and we visited the Bear Den after the parade.
