Ruby at Three

Fair Warning: This post got extremely long and is full of info that I'm sure only a mom will find interesting.  I won't judge (or even know!) if you just watch the video and scroll through the pics!

We had Ruby's 3 year check-up this week.  She weighs 29 lbs (50%), is 3'1 (50%), and healthy.  I was SO proud of how well she did.  I had both girls there for check-ups so it was an extra long appointment and I was juggling Ada while trying to remember all my questions.  Ruby was happily cooperative while Dr. Plax checked her out and when the nurse gave her the flu mist vaccine.  She also had to have a blood draw (lead test) which I was a little worried about.  She watched curiously when the nurse stuck her and collected the blood without a flinch.  Apparently she is not a bleeder because the nurse had to stick Ruby a second time.  Luckily Ruby was more intrigued with the cool bandaids because even the second stick didn't provide enough.  So three sticks and band-aids later she was finally done.  Such a big girl and so brave!

Ruby is still not a morning person and can be cranky even when she wakes up on her own.  She does like breakfast though and is a really good eater almost all the time.  She still loves snacks and would eat all day if we let her.  She'd also probably watch TV (PBS Kids or a DVD) all day if allowed!  She doesn't play by herself very much or for very long, but loves to play with mom or dad.  She loves to be read to, likes puzzles, and is starting to play pretend and games more.

Ruby is no longer "napping" but does take a "quiet rest" time in her room every afternoon with little argument.  She often spends some of this time "flatting out" her clothes like this.
The best part about it is that she'll fold them and put them back in her dresser when she's finished!

She loves her preschool.  It's been just perfect for her!  Miss Pam and Miss Nancy seem to really enjoy her and I can tell Ruby feels comfortable there.  She gets ready without a fuss when I tell her it's a school day.  I grill her with questions when I pick her up.  I usually hear about the book(s) they read, the project they did, and, of course, what they ate for snack!  She knows some of the other girl's names, but I don't think she plays with them too much yet.  We are amassing quite a collection of projects!  I had her first conference last week and was told she is a good listener and always follows directions.  I can't ask for much more than that!
Ruby likes to go to the library and the park (places we walk often).  She is an observer, always watching and listening to the other kids play.  She can get a bit wild in the late afternoons which is probably due to dropping her nap.  She and I are both happy to see Dad walk through the door in the evening.  Steve usually tries to wear off some of her energy when he gets home.  Somehow they started jumping and wrestling on our bed which Ruby thinks is hilarious and now she wants to do it daily.  The amusing thing about this is the way she refers to it... "Daddy let's do funny stuff on your bed!"

Ruby still goes to bed pretty early, usually 7:00.  Now that Ada is sharing a room with her, bedtime has been smoother!  Evidence of her early bedtime:  We went out to dinner the other night and it got later than usual so that it was past the girls typical 7:00 bedtime.  Ruby stretches her arms out to her sides looks up to the sky and says "I'm in the dark!"

Ruby is such a sweet big sister.  Whenever Ada fusses Ruby knows just what she wants or needs and will run to get her lovey and pacifier.  She can always make Ada laugh.  As I was cleaning up lunch the other day and Ada was babbling away in her highchair I hear Ruby say "Are you telling me all about it Ada?" in her sing-song voice.  I asked Ruby what Ada was telling her all about and she says, "That God made us all."

She's a smartie pants:  "Mom, B starts with /b/, /b/, /b/, basketti."

Ruby's First Career Aspiration:  While watching the root beer being bottled at Fitz's Ruby says, "I wish I could work on the bottles when I get big!"  Grandpa Steve will be so proud!!!
