So, as I may have alluded to earlier, Ruby is not real fond of sleep. This has been driving her dear mother a bit crazy. Yes, I have been frantically reading anything I can get my hands on about infant sleep. So far we have concluded that everything she is doing is "normal", but alas, I continue my quest to find the solution to getting her to sleep! Now, before you start offering suggestions let me just mention a few of the tricks that have failed: bouncing, rocking, swaying, singing, humming, shshing, side/stomach, pacifier, baths, massage, swaddling, not swaddling, laying her down sound asleep, laying her down drowsy, white noise, vacuum, music, patting, rubbing, her swing, her bouncy seat...just to name a few! After basically zero naps yesterday she is off to a better start today. For those of you interested, I held her while I sat on my exercise ball and bounced her to sleep. If that's the magical answer I'll let you know! After deciding I could no longer hold her and needed to lay her down I came upon a dilemma: Do I risk waking her up while I swaddle her (or put her in the baby straight jacket as we like to call it)

Yes, these are the trials of my days!!!
Sounds like you've tried it all! Here's one to try if you're not going to swaddle: "feet to foot"
ReplyDeleteLay her in her crib with her feet against the foot of the crib. Then lay a receiving blanket over the top of her (from her armpits down) and tuck the sides into the sides of the mattress. This will provide some containment without waking her. You can even have the blanket tucked into one side before you lie her down, so all you have to do is pull it over her and tuck in the other side. Hang in there and I hope you get some sleep soon!
I Personally cannot think of a thing to do other than you have done. maybe letting her stay awake until she is very tired. GGPA I would rock her forever and we would both be sleeping.GGPA My Experience was that first babies dont want to sleep and they don't want mama to sleep either. The good news is 2nd and 3rd babies sleep like little lambs and so does mama . GGMA
ReplyDeleteI haven't got any answers. All I have is "hang in there, it will get better." Thank you for the updates and the pictures. Ruby is such a blessing to us and I know it is hard day by day, but anything worthwhile always means a lot of work. You guys are in our thoughts and prayers. Love Grandpa Bill
ReplyDeleteRuby is so cute I just want to squeeze her! It sounds like you've tried it all! I think little Ruby just doesn't need or want a lot of sleep. She seems to be thriving so whatever you are doing can't be wrong. I do think the bouncing on the exercise ball sounds like fun though... Maybe putting her in the sling and vacuming? Of course then I suppose it would be impossible to get her out of the sling without waking her up?? I hope you all get some rest soon. I pray for all of you every night when I go to bed and every morning on my way to work. Love, Gramma Donna
ReplyDeleteOh - I remember those days (even though they are over 21 years ago!!). Just remember, this is all new for baby and she's adjusting to the 'outside' world after being warm and cozy inside mommy's belly. Give her time, follow your instincts, set a schedule and try to stick to it daily. Good Luck!
