Ruby Plays Volleyball

We are so proud of Ruby for trying a new activity this spring!

The local rec department starts volleyball in 3rd grade.  Honestly, it seems a bit young for volleyball (I remember playing in 7th grade and it was difficult) but we encouraged her to try now rather than wait so she didn't feel "behind".  The teams were 3rd/4th grade combined so most of the kids had played before (many of the 3rd graders played a season in the fall).  Thankfully Ruby got on a team with some of her friends, but her whole team was new so they were at somewhat of a disadvantage.  The "Arctic Wolves didn't win a single game, but they were definitely the most improved team for the season.

Ruby gained confidence and developed a pretty consistent serve.  (They serve once from the back line and then get to move up about half-way.)  Her team had several games what were SO SO close, but most of all they learned a bunch and had fun.  So much so, in fact, that Ruby is going to do volleyball camp this summer and is already planning to play again in the fall.  The Woodway Family Center, where we played, and her coach set up a good non-threatening environment to allow kids to try something new.
