Sleep and Other News

Ever since Ruby was born we've had people ask us what the most surprising thing about parenthood is, or what has been the hardest part about having a newborn. I think Steve and I both agree that the whole sleeping thing (or lack there of) is definitely near the top of the list of challenges. I remember a conversation Steve and I had this summer before Ruby's arrival when we both admitted the thing we were most nervous about was being up all night. We are both people who need a lot of sleep, so we knew it would be a challenge, but I don't think I ever realized how much my world would revolve around that word: sleep! My days revolve around getting Ruby to sleep, how long she sleeps, and how long she'll be awake before she needs to sleep again, while my nights revolve around how often she'll wake up.
We had a rough start, but by about 6 or 8 weeks Ruby was turning into a fabulous sleeper. She'd wake only once at night for a quick feed, and usually went an 8 or 9 hour stretch before waking! We were totally spoiled (and I think we knew it!). Unfortunately, it didn't last. For the last 3 weeks, Ruby's been waking numerous times at night, which makes for a very tired Momma and Papa! I'm going back to work in just one more short week so I've been worrying about this, but last night she returned to her old ways. Cross your fingers (and toes) that this will continue!

In other news, we went to the babysitter's house today to "practice". Ruby had lots of fun with Miss Kerry, Taylor and Ava! Mommy didn't have quite as much fun at work, but knows Ruby will be in good hands.

Ruby wore her cute big girl outfit to the babysitter's house- her first pair of jeans! (My teammate made this for Ruby when she was born. Thank you Brean!)

PS- I hope to post a new video soon!

  1. I'm glad Ruby has returned to her sleeping longer. She is such a sweetheart and has wonderful parents. You guys are so dedicated to her and have done a terrific job. Good luck with what lies ahead. I know you will meet the challenge and reap the reward! Love you all very much.

  2. She sure has grown up already and cuter by the minute. I hope her experience with the baby sitter and the other little ones will be an enjoable one. God bless. Going back to to school and being away from Ruby will be difficult for you. When you go to pick her up she'll have a smile a mile long for you. Love all 3 of you. GGMA&GGPA

  3. Like this outfit much better than that 'purple' thing!! hehe
Sleep is under-rated. That's why you have kids when you are younger, then when you're old you can sleep all the time. lol
You will survive, we have all been there and thought the same thing.

PS - How's Monte doing, haven't heard much from him.......

  4. Hehehe...Monte is doing fine. He thinks he's totally deprived of attention and reminds us of this fact every night by banging on our shades or closet door!
