Slowly But Surely

From Winter 2014-15
Hello!  The lack of posts is probably because we are in our new house and are slowly getting settled.  Like we planned, we moved a lot of our stuff taking small loads over the course of a week.
From Winter 2014-15
The girls weren't thrilled with the back and forth, back and forth, but they got lots of extra iPad time!  I avoided boxing up anything I could just throw in the car!  Steve and a couple movers got all of the big stuff, boxes and tubs in just a couple hours one Saturday morning.  The unpacking, putting away, and organizing has been slow going, but I'm finally starting to feel like we are getting there.  At least I don't have to tunnel through boxes to get across a room anyway!  The decorating will take awhile I have a feeling.  Ruby and Ada have been super creative playing with the big empty boxes.

We have spaceships, helmets, cardboard dolls, and even a slide- oh, my!  It's a bit of a catch-22; the boxes keep them busy, but I'm ready to be rid of the boxes!

All in all moving's gone well, but there have been a couple stressful moments, mostly revolving around our new appliances.  We bought a new refrigerator, washer and dryer.  I'm loving all 3 of them now but getting them wasn't easy!  We ordered them several weeks before we needed them delivered but then got a message that they would be a week late.  I didn't panic too much about the washer and dryer because I knew we could live without those for several days.  BUT, we could not move out of our rental house and into a new house with no fridge for 5 days!  Steve fought with Home Depot for several days and finally got a loaner fridge but I was not happy that they made us figure out a way to haul it home and back to the store when our new one arrived.

Let me paint a picture for you of the day the appliances finally arrived:  I get a phone call telling me they would be there in 30 minutes, no probably 10 or 20 minutes.  Okay, I stopped what I was doing (some other giant unpacking mess) and quickly started emptying our fridge contents into coolers and all over the kitchen counters and table.  Three minutes into this, ding-dong, they're here.  I show the guys where everything goes and continue to unload the loaner fridge while barking at the girls to stay out of the way.  Everything is installed and running and the delivery guys are gone and it is now lunchtime.  I get the girls busy doing something while I start loading our food into the new fridge when I hear water.  Hmmm.... they started the washer to run through a cycle before using but why is there now water overflowing from the toilet across the hall!!  I start grabbing towels and whatever I can find (remember most of our stuff is still in boxes!) to clean up the water.  As I'm plunging the toilet I realize no one has used this bathroom all day, why would it all of a sudden overflow?  Unable to get a hold of Steve at work, I call our realtor (I know, I bet she loves me!) to ask if she has a plumber I should call or do I call our home warranty company.  My thought is this is related to the washer but I don't want to be the crazy lady who calls Home Depot because her toilet backed up when the new machine was installed.  As I'm on the phone with my realtor (who, by the way says it is probably due to the washer) water starts gushing out again.  I was a little frantic.  There wasn't. anything. dry. left.  After a few seconds I decide to stop the wash machine and instantly the toilet stops overflowing.  Phew!  (I know, I know, I should have turned off the water to the toilet.  Next time I'll know how.)  Steve calls back and is on his way home.  I call Home Depot and start giving them my info when someone knocks on the door.  Thinking it's Steve, I open the door to... our new neighbors bringing cupcakes!  Oh. my. word.  They kindly chat with Ada (Ruby has headphones on and is obliviously listening to books on tape) while I talk to the Home Depot operator.  Apologizing to the neighbors, who now think I'm a nutcase, I continue to hold my phone on speaker because I'm on hold with Home Depot.  The neighbors leave, Steve returns, and Home Depot says they'll send someone out NEXT WEEK to check it.  Thanks.  (As you might guess, we won't be doing much more business with Home Depot here in Waco.)  We turn off the water, clean up more water, and throw wet towels in the dryer- thank God I have a new dryer!!!  Okay, remember what I was doing before... yeah, food is still all over my kitchen.  After I quickly shove it in the fridge I feed the girls lunch at 2:30.  This story is long, but so was the day.  Our home warranty company sent plumbers about 7:30 that evening that had to completely clean out the clogged water line (not covered!).  So about 9pm we were able to get the girls in bed and put that new washer and dryer to good use washing loads and loads of towels.  Crazy!  But truly, I am thankful for 3 brand new appliances.

We are loving the whole house, but we do have a wish list of big and little things we'd like to do of course and, with our personalities, we want them all done yesterday.  We will likely be putting in a sliding patio door, getting gutters and are doing some landscaping in the backyard.  We are anxious to have those things done so we can have the doors open, the girls can be out back, and we can enjoy the yard this spring.  We've had a ton of rain lately (no idea if this is normal TX spring?!) and the backyard off the patio is a mud pit so hopefully gutters will help.  Steve has also been working hard to get the yard ready to lay mulch around the patio and around the swing set, but the rain has made this a slow project.  I've also started painting the fireplace, making new covers for the couch pillows, and we got new kitchen chairs I need to spray paint too.

So we are unpacking and doing 743 projects as well!  It will be a busy and exciting spring for us!
